Shepherd's Pie

Also known as  'Cottage Pie',  and  'Hachis Parmentier'.

There are countless variations on Shepherd's Pie, but the core recipe includes ground red meat cooked in gravy or sauce with onions, topped with mashed potato, and then baked. Other vegetables are commonly added to the filling, such as carrots, peas, and/or corn. This English dish was originally used as a way use leftover meat of any kind.

10 minutes
1.

In a large pan, fry onion in the butter until tender.


15 minutes

Add the vegetables to the onion and cook until tender.


10 minutes
3.

Add meat, Worcestershire sauce, and broth. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered, adding additional broth as needed to keep from drying out.


5 minutes
4.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Spread the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of a 3-qt. baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes over top of the meat.


30 minutes
5.

Bake until browned and bubbling.

Comments


Used mashed sweet potatoes, ground beef, 1.5 c. chopped carrot, 0.5 c. chopped celery, 15 oz. creamed corn, and chicken broth. Added a total of 1 tsp. salt and 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce. This is quite good, but the Worcestershire sauce was not easy to detect, so will add 1 tsp. more next time.
