Thai basil may refer to one of two varieties of basil: regular Thai basil or Thai holy basil. If a recipe calls simply for 'Thai basil' use the regular variety.
Thai basil tastes similar to common basil, but with a more anise flavor. If Thai basil is not available, common basil is a better substitute than Thai holy basil.
