Leek

Description

Leeks are a relative of the onion, originally from the Mediterranean and Middle East. They resemble a green onion, but are much larger and have a mild flavor. The darkest green portions of the leek are typically removed before use, as it is tougher than the pale or white portions. Take care when preparing leeks to thoroughly wash out the sand and soil that tends to accumulate inside the layers of leaves.
