In the Southern Hemisphere, some people refer to what we here call 'green onions' as 'shallots'. Spring onions are similar in appearance to green onions, but are not the same. The latter are milder and more tender.
Description
Green onions can be used as an aromatic and herb. When used as an aromatic, usually only the lighter parts of the onion are used, leaving the green tops for separate use. In Buddhist temple cuisine, scallions are one of the five forbidden vegetables, considered a stimulant that hinders spiritual meditation.
