Hoisin

Description

Hoisin is an Asian condiment based on fermented soybean paste in addition to a number of spices. It is common in Chinese and Vietnamese stir-fries, pork, and duck dishes. 'Hoisin' is Cantonese for 'seafood', but the modern version of this condiment does not contain any seafood, nor is it typically served with seafood. The sauce has a dark color and thick consistency. It is very salty, slightly sweet, and very umami.
