Banana Bract

Description

The purple-red, petal-like structures that compose a banana flower, covering the rows of florets. The outermost bracts are too tough to eat, and are either discarded or used to serve food. The inner, still red bracts are still generally too tough to eat and are usually discarded, but if boiled and well processed (into a chutney for instance) can be eaten. The innermost bracts are pale in color, eventually becoming too undeveloped to separate easily, forming the banana heart.
