Marsala

Disambiguation

Many cooking wines are labeled as 'marsala' in the United States, but actual Marsala is an appellation-designated wine from Western Sicily, so look for the DOC mark on the label.

Description

This wine is produced from overripe Grillo, Inzolia, and/or Catarratto grapes. This base wine is then fortified, either during or after fermentation, and aged at least one year in oak.
Marsala is categorized by color (oro, ambra, and rubino), sweetness (secco, semisecco, and dolce) and age.
